Hot stone massage is a variation of the classic massage therapy that so many have come to know and enjoy. Heated smooth, flat stones are placed on key points of the body. The massage therapist may also hold the stones and use them to massage certain areas of the body.
Hot stones have been used for healing since ancient times, but came in vogue after massage therapist Mary Nelson introduced her hot stone massage technique, called LaStone Therapy. Once introduced, it caught on rapidly with many adding it to their own practice and developing individual techniques using hot stones.
The stones are usually made from basalt, a type of rock that is heavy in iron. This helps them to retain the heat that they’re now known for. River rocks are normally the ones used because they are smooth from having been in the current of the river for so long.
The stones are submerged in water and heated until they are within a preferred temperature range. The placement of the stones usually corresponds with specific points along the back, palms of the hand or between the toes, but exact placement may vary with each client.
The warmth from the stones relaxes the muscles, enhances circulations and helps to calm the nervous system.
Some therapists place stones on points that are thought to be energy center of the body in order to bring a great sense of balance to the body and mind.
